How To Write Effective Products Titles For Amazon Products

Amazon product title length is limited to 200 characters; adding any more may risk your listing being omitted from Amazon searches. In most cases, it is not recommended or necessary to use more than 80 characters. The 80 character limit is based on research performed by Amazon’s Seller Support, as it makes it easier for customers to find and buy your products.

To help out with getting your titles just right, Amazon has provided a list of formulas and guidelines for writing the perfect title. We have gathered and summarized the most important information for you below.

The Basics

Be sure to include these 4 details:

  • Brand name
  • Model, color, type, pattern, flavor, or other variation
  • Size (clothing), package quantity, container volume, or other measurements [Important: only include these if they are relevant to the product.]
  • Keywords – A short description of the item to help customers search for your product

Next, you want to make sure that your title fits these grammatical guidelines recommended by Amazon:

  • Capitalize the First Letter of Each Word
  • Spell out units of measurement such as Ounce, Inch, and Pound (not oz, in, or lb.)
  • All numbers should be numerals (i.e. use “2”, not “two”)
  • Ampersands (&) should not be used in titles unless part of a brand name; spell out and lowercase “and”

Also, be sure to NEVER include any of the below elements in your title:

  • Price
  • Sales or promotions (e.g. 30% off)
  • Information about you, the seller
  • ALL CAPITAL LETTERS
  • Symbols ($,?,!)
  • Suggestive words (e.g. “#1 Seller,” “Best,” “Top,” etc.)

Other things to keep in mind:

  • Your title tells the customer what your product is not what it does
  • Don’t stuff your title full of unnecessary details
  • Don’t go overboard on the keywords
  • Leave out special deals, discounts, or rebates (these can be included elsewhere)
  • Only include information that distinguishes you from nearly identical items
  • Don’t sell too hard, they’re already looking – You WILL be penalized for overly lengthy titles
  • Amazon may pull your product from search results
  • You may appear less legitimate compared to more concise titles
  • Customers may find your title difficult to read and move on to the next
  • Less is more, but be careful not to cut out too much
  • Make sure that you include any details that set you apart from competitors
  • Include a few, well placed, important keywords

In their efforts, many sellers fail to see the importance of quality titles. Don’t make this mistake. Sellers who remember details such as the ones listed above are more easily discovered, appear more professional, and tend to experience much higher success rates than those who don’t.
